First Light: Opening Day at Hokkaido

The alarm goes off at 4:30 AM. Outside the window of our lodge in Niseko, the snow is falling hard and fast — big, fluffy flakes that stack up by the centimeter. This is the moment we have been waiting for all year.

The Pursuit of First Tracks

There is nothing quite like first tracks on a powder day. The mountain is untouched, a blank canvas waiting for your edges to draw the first lines of the season. For the ASPECT team, Hokkaido has become our annual pilgrimage — a place where the snow is legendary and the terrain feels endless.

This year we brought three riders, each with their own style: Takeshi on his big mountain freeride board, carving through the birch trees at speed; Sarah linking powder turns on the open faces above tree line; and Marcus chasing the deepest pockets with his signature aggressive style.

Behind the Lens

Filming in deep powder is as demanding as riding it. Our crew braved waist-deep snow, whiteout conditions, and subzero temperatures to capture every moment. The result is an unfiltered look at what it means to chase the mountain — the stoke, the struggle, and the silence of a summit before the first drop.

Why Hokkaido?

Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, receives some of the deepest and driest snow on the planet. The Siberian winds sweep across the Sea of Japan, picking up moisture and slamming into the mountain ranges of central Hokkaido with incredible force. The result is consistent, high-quality powder snow that draws riders from around the globe. Unlike the heavy, wet snow of coastal ranges, Hokkaido powder is light and fluffy — the kind that makes you feel like you are floating on air.

The terrain around Niseko offers everything from wide-open groomers for cruisers to steep tree runs for the adventurous. The combination of reliable snowfall, diverse terrain, and Japanese hospitality makes it a must-visit destination for any serious snowboarder.

The Gear That Made It Possible

For this trip, our riders relied on the ASPECT Elevate for its versatility across Hokkaido’s varied conditions.
